Kohl's Cash confuses more shoppers than almost any other store program, mostly because it is not a coupon and not quite money either. It is store credit with a clock on it. Once you understand the two dates that matter — the earn window and the spend window — the whole system becomes simple, and you stop leaving it expired in a drawer.
How you earn it
During announced earn periods, Kohl's gives Kohl's Cash based on what you spend in a single transaction — the classic offer is $10 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 spent. Two details matter:
It is calculated after coupons, before tax. Percent-off and dollar-off coupons come off your total first, so a cart that starts above $50 can still land below the earning line after discounts. If you are close to a $50 step, check the after-coupon total before you check out.
Some things do not count. Purchases of gift cards and Sephora at Kohl's merchandise are excluded from earning, per Kohl's own terms. The fine print on each earn event controls, so a quick look at it beats assuming.
Kohl's Rewards members also build up rewards on everyday purchases that convert into Kohl's Cash separately. That rewards-earned cash and event-earned cash are two different piles, with two different clocks — which is exactly why people lose track.
The spend window is the whole game
Event Kohl's Cash can only be spent during the specific redeem window printed on it, which starts after the earn period ends. Miss that window and the value is gone — there is no grace period at the register.
Three habits keep it from expiring unused:
Put the redeem dates in your phone calendar the day you earn it. Not when you get home — at the register or right after checkout, while the dates are in your hand.
Keep it in the Kohl's app wallet or one envelope. Scattered paper coupons are how Kohl's Cash dies. One place, every time.
Plan the spend trip before the window opens. Kohl's Cash is best spent on things you were going to buy anyway — basics, kids' clothes in the next size, household staples. Spending it on a random item just because it is "free" is how a $10 coupon turns into a $40 purchase you did not need.
How it combines at checkout
Per Kohl's terms, Kohl's Cash is applied before percent-off total-purchase coupons. In plain words: your Kohl's Cash comes off first, and then a percentage coupon works on what is left. That order is fixed by the store, not chosen by you, so the smart move is to do the simple math before checkout on a big order — sometimes splitting purchases changes what you earn on the next round.
Kohl's Cash generally cannot be spent on gift cards, Sephora at Kohl's merchandise, charitable Kohl's Cares items, or payments toward a Kohl's credit card. Keep that list in mind if you were planning to spend it in the beauty aisle.
Returns can claw it back
If you return an item from the purchase that earned the Kohl's Cash, Kohl's may reduce the cash you earned — and if you already spent it, the amount can come out of your refund. This is not a trick; it is in the terms. It just means a "buy it to earn the cash, return it later" plan does not work, and a genuine return can surprise you at the counter if you have already spent the cash.
The one-sentence rule
Kohl's Cash is real money with an expiration date: earn it on purchases you already planned, calendar the spend window immediately, and spend it on your list — never let the coupon write the list for you.
Program terms change, and each earn event has its own dates and exclusions. Always check the dates and fine print printed on your Kohl's Cash or in the Kohl's app.
